The Bristol Bullring will be the big challenge for the more inexperienced drivers this weekend, namely Logano, Speed and Ambrose. Known for its rough and tumble action, flaring tempers, thrown helmets and "paybacks are hell" attitude, Bristol is as close to the Saturday night dirt-track free-for-all that was the kernel that birthed NASCAR as we know it today.
Almost to a man, Bristol is the favorite track of the veteran drivers; no restrictor plates, intimate atmosphere (can you say small and cozy?), and certainly NOT boring!!
This weekend has more veteran drivers and past winners than most tracks; it also has many drivers seeking paybacks for perceived offenses from last season. Believe me, drivers don't forget!!
This being the 5th race is critical to drivers at the back of the pack points-wise; NASCAR will afterward begin the formal calculating of points based on driver performance rather than owner points, so this Bristol race is critical for many sitting on the so-called bubble.
My pick this week is Jeff Gordon, who is starting in 10th position. And I expect Joey Logano to be the first washout. Sorry, Joey. |
